Best Horror Movies October 2026: Clayface Leads Halloween's
Horror isn't just having a moment in 2026 it's having a whole year. The genre has generated roughly $1.28 billion domestically, already 90% of last year's all-time record, with 81 days still to go. Six horror films have opened at #1 this year. And month of October The Halloween month is absolutely stacked. Here are the horror movies you need on your radar.
Now playing: the hits
Other Mommy (in theaters now) Jessica Chastain's campy horror just opened to $27.5M despite an 18% Rotten Tomatoes score and a D+ CinemaScore. Proof that in October, audiences just want to be scared.
Resident Evil (in theaters now) Zach Cregger's reboot is at huge spike of $138.5M domestic / $320M worldwide, a franchise record. A $40.6M China opening didn't hurt.
Verity (in theaters now) Colleen Hoover's thriller isn't pure horror, but its dark edge helped it to earn more than $53.9M domestic. Horror-adjacent counts in October.
Coming October 16: double trouble
Crawlers An apartment block overrun by venomous spiders during lockdown. Simple premise, maximum nightmare fuel. If you're arachnophobic, maybe sit this one out.
Whalefall Austin Abrams plays a scuba diver swallowed alive by a sperm whale, with Josh Brolin co-starring. Claustrophobic survival horror think 127 Hours meets Moby Dick.
October 23: Clayface — the big one
Clayface is the horror release I'm watching closest. James Watkins (Eden Lake, The Woman in Black) directs the story of Matt Hagen, a film star whose fall turns him into a revenge-driven monster. It's DC's boldest and Biggest swing in years a full horror film built around a Batman villain, and early buzz suggests it's genuinely scary rather than just "comic-book dark."
With Other Mommy proving horror audiences show up no matter what critics say, Clayface walks into a perfect market. If it lands, it could be the genre's biggest October since Smile.
Closing out the month
Breeder (Oct 28, limited) and Hell House LLC (Oct 29) round out the theatrical slate, while Shudder drops The Cycle (Oct 23) for streaming. Then November brings Victorian Psycho (Nov 13) and December closes with Werwulf on Christmas Day because nothing says holidays like a werewolf movie.
My take
Here's what fascinates me about year 2026: horror is the only genre that reliably works right now. Prestige dramas flop badly (The Social Reckoning, $5.5M). Superhero films are hit-or-miss. But put something scary in theaters in October and audiences show up reviews be damned. Other Mommy at 18% RT doing $27.5M is the ultimate proof. My prediction: Clayface is the one to beat for the rest of the month. A Batman villain as a straight horror lead? That's the kind of swing that either becomes iconic or infamous no middle ground.
