Clayface Tracking for $30M+ Opening — Can DC's $40M Horror Gamble Pay Off?

The Clayface box office picture is getting clearer — and more encouraging for DC Studios. The R-rated body-horror film, the third theatrical release of James Gunn's DC Universe, is now tracking for a $30 million-plus domestic opening following a solid start to ticket presales, according to Geek Vibes Nation's October 10 report. It hits theaters October 23, with international markets opening October 21.

That's the high end of the range. Boxoffice Pro's first long-range forecast (October 2) put the film between $23 million and $33 million domestically. The new presale data suggests momentum is building toward the top of that bracket — a strong sign five days out from release.

The Tracking: $23M to $33M, Leaning High

The tracking data has an interesting quirk: Clayface sits at just 32% awareness, but among people who know it exists, 21% say they plan to see it opening weekend. That's a smaller-than-usual audience that's almost twice as committed to showing up day one — the classic profile of a horror release with a dedicated core.

Weekday sales could add another 35% to 50% on top of the opening weekend, potentially pushing the first full week to between $34 million and $48 million. For a film of this scale, that would be a dream start.

Why $40M Changes the Math

Here's what makes Clayface different from every other DC bet: it reportedly cost just $40 million to make. That's roughly a quarter of Supergirl's $170M-budget flop — and Supergirl opened to $37.1 million in June before collapsing to $126.5 million worldwide, a result Variety said left the studio bracing for a $100 million loss.

Under the usual industry math (a film needs roughly 2 to 2.5 times its budget to break even), Clayface needs only about $80-100 million worldwide to turn a profit. Even the low end of tracking — $23 million — would cover nearly 60% of the production budget in a single weekend. The high end would cover more than 80%.

The Bear Case: Presales Trail Resident Evil

Not every signal is rosy. Box Office Theory's earlier tracking pointed to a more modest $20-26 million range, and presale data from the MTC3 theater chain has Clayface pacing 66% behind Resident Evil's fall horror success, which would translate to roughly a $20 million debut.

The calendar isn't entirely friendly either. Street Fighter's $31M opening weekend will still be pulling the same young male audience, and the same frame brings Klara and the Sun, Wildwood, and Wicker. Awareness still trails comparable releases, and an R-rated body-horror film about a lesser-known Batman villain is inherently a narrower sell than a superhero tentpole.

Verdict: A Smart Halloween Gamble

Directed by James Watkins (Speak No Evil) and starring Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, Clayface is DC's least conventional swing yet — and at $40 million, it's a swing the studio can afford to take. If the $30M+ tracking holds, this could be the Halloween season's smartest bet: a horror film wearing a comic-book costume, arriving exactly when audiences want to be scared.
