DreamWorks Most Acclaimed Movie of 2026 Flopped With $12.8M
Mostly Critics called it one of the most acclaimed 3D animated movies of 2026. Audiences... didn't show up. DreamWorks Forgotten Island opened to just $12.8 million domestically and a shocking number for a film with glowing reviews and the disconnect has Hollywood scratching its head.
Rave Reviews, Empty Seats
The film sits comfortably among the year's best multiple time reviewed animations, with critics praising its ambition and artistry. NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour dissected it at length; Animation Magazine covered the team behind it. The film even set a record for the biggest DreamWorks Animation opening of all time in the Philippines.
But domestically, the global total is hovering around $20 million far below a typical DreamWorks opening. As one Yahoo feature put it, audiences are "sleeping on" the movie.
Why Great Movies Flop
This is the paradox of 2026 theatrical: quality and ticket sales have decoupled. Forgotten Island opened against a crowded slate and Verity was taking the weekend with $32.6M, horror and prestige films were eating everything else. A mid-budget original animation with no franchise safety net had almost no headroom.
My take: this is the scariest kind of flop for the industry not a bad movie failing, but a good one. It tells studios that originality is punished and familiarity is rewarded, which is exactly the lesson nobody wanted confirmed.
