Minions 3: Release Date, Director & the Teenage Gru Concept Trailer

Banana! (Sorry — had to.) The Minions are officially coming back to theaters, and this time we have a real date, a real director, and a real plan. But the internet, being the internet, couldn't wait — so a fan-made concept trailer has already imagined the whole movie. Let's sort out what's actually happening from what's pure fan fiction.

Minions 3 is officially happening

This part is 100% real. Universal and Illumination announced Minions 3 for June 30, 2027, positioning it as the big July 4th weekend opener — the same slot that turned Despicable Me 4 and Minions: The Rise of Gru into box office monsters.

The creative team is a homecoming: Pierre Coffin — the man who has literally voiced the Minions since 2010 — is directing, and Brian Lynch, who wrote the first Minions, is penning the script. Illumination founder Chris Meledandri is producing. When the guy who is the Minions' voice is also calling the shots, you're in safe hands.

And the stakes are enormous. The Despicable Me/Minions franchise is closing in on $5 billion in global box office, making it the highest-grossing animated franchise of all time. The Rise of Gru alone pulled in $940 million back in 2022.

The "Teenager Years of Gru" concept trailer

Now for the fun part. A fan-made concept trailer titled Minions 3: The Teenager Years of Gru imagines the threequel as a high-school comedy: Gru dealing with teenage angst, homework, and his rise to supervillainy, with Kevin, Stuart, and Bob "helping" every step of the way. Birthday parties, Hawaiian luaus, high-tech lab mishaps — the works.

The trailer itself is 1 minute and 53 seconds of almost pure Minion gibberish — "banana," "papoi," "gelato" — and honestly? That's the most accurate trailer ever made, because gibberish is about 90% of a Minions movie. It works.

Could teenage Gru actually work as a movie?

Here's where fan fiction accidentally stumbles into a good idea. Minions: The Rise of Gru gave us 11-year-old Gru in the 1970s and made nearly a billion dollars. The teenage years are the obvious next chapter — picture it: the 1980s, a mulleted Gru trying to be taken seriously by actual villains, John Hughes meets supervillain origin story.

To be crystal clear: the teenage-Gru plot is the fan trailer's invention, not Illumination's announced story. The studio hasn't revealed a single plot detail. But the concept has logic on its side, and I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't buy a ticket.

What we know vs. what's made up

Confirmed: June 30, 2027 release date. Pierre Coffin directing. Brian Lynch writing. That's the whole official list — everything else is speculation.

Fan-made: the teenage Gru storyline, the high school setting, all "footage" in the concept trailer. Fun, but fiction.

When will we see a real trailer?

With nearly two years to go, don't hold your breath — a first official teaser will most likely drop in late 2026. Until then, the fan concepts are keeping the hype warm. And if Illumination's marketing team is smart, they're watching which fan ideas get the most love. Just saying.
