Moana Live-Action (2026): Cast, Release Date & Trailer Breakdown

Some movies you hear about and think, "yeah, that was inevitable." Disney's live-action Moana is one of them — and unlike some of the concept trailers floating around, this one is completely, officially real. It sails into theaters on July 10, 2026, and now that the official trailer is out, the hype is fully justified.

The confirmed cast

Disney ran a worldwide search for its Moana and found her in Sydney: Catherine Lagaʻaia, who was 17 when cast, plays the wayfinder herself — a young actress of Samoan heritage who called the role "an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples."

Returning as the trickster demigod Maui is Dwayne Johnson, who voiced the character in the 2016 original and is also producing the film through his Seven Bucks Productions. Around them: John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and the great Rena Owen as Gramma Tala. Behind the camera is Thomas Kail — yes, the Hamilton director — which tells you exactly how seriously Disney is taking the music.

And in a lovely touch, Auliʻi Cravalho, the original voice of Moana, is aboard as an executive producer, with Lin-Manuel Miranda producing as well.

The concept trailer that imagined it first

Before the official marketing machine kicked in, fan-made concept trailers were already dreaming up this movie — including ours. The fan concept leans into everything people love about the original: the call of the ocean, Maui's larger-than-life entrance, and that swelling "how far I'll go" energy.

Then the real thing arrived. Disney's official teaser (November 2025) gave us our first look at the reimagined Motunui, the Kakamora tribe, and Lagaʻaia singing "I Am Moana" — and it looks every bit as sweeping as the animation.

What the remake needs to nail

Three things will decide whether this soars or sinks. First, the ocean itself — in the original, the water is practically a character, playful and alive. That's brutally hard in live-action and absolutely essential.

Second, the songs. "How Far I'll Go," "You're Welcome," "Shiny" — these aren't just tunes, they're the emotional architecture of the film. With Kail and Miranda involved, the music is in good hands, but the new arrangements have to earn their place.

Third, Gramma Tala. She's the soul of the story, and Rena Owen has the gravitas to break hearts all over again.

Release date and what to expect

Moana opens in theaters on July 10, 2026 — a prime summer slot, theatrical first. It's worth noting this is the shortest gap ever between a Disney animated original and its live-action remake: barely ten years since 2016. Disney clearly believes this story is timeless enough to retell already.

Watch the fan concept, then watch the official trailer, and try telling me the ocean isn't calling. I dare you.
