Keanu Reeves James Wan Team-Up: Korean Thriller Remake
A Keanu Reeves James Wan collaboration could finally be on the cards — and it is for one of the most exciting remakes currently in development. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Keanu Reeves has entered negotiations to star opposite Don Lee (Ma Dong-seok) in Paramount's English-language reimagining of the 2019 South Korean crime thriller The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil, with Wan attached to direct. One important note before the excitement takes over: Reeves is in talks, not signed — several outlets are already overstating this as a done deal, and it is not one yet. But the mere prospect of Reeves headlining a James Wan film has already sent film fans into overdrive.
The News: Reeves Is In Talks, Not Signed
THR broke the story on 20 October 2026: Reeves is negotiating to lead the project. If the deal closes, he will star alongside Don Lee, who is confirmed to reprise his role as crime boss Jang Dong-su from the original film — and who is also producing through his company, Big Punch Global. The project has been in development since 2019, and Paramount first revealed Wan's involvement back in March, so this casting news is the clearest sign yet that the remake is finally moving toward production.
The Original: A 97% Rotten Tomatoes Korean Crime Classic
Directed by Lee Won-tae, the 2019 original premiered in the Midnight Screenings section at the Cannes Film Festival and reportedly holds a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It opened theatrically in South Korea on 15 May 2019 and also screened at the 2019 Fantasia International Film Festival, where critics praised its propulsive cat-and-mouse premise. The story follows a police officer (Kim Mu-yeol) and a crime boss (Lee) who enter an uneasy partnership to track down a serial killer — each with his own motives for wanting him caught. Double-crosses, cat-and-mouse chases and clashes between police and criminals, and between rival gangs, follow. It is exactly the kind of muscular, crowd-pleasing genre material that travels well across borders.
Which Role Could Keanu Reeves Play? (Speculation)
The trades have not said which part Reeves is circling — and this is where it gets interesting. With Lee reprising the gangster, the two remaining title roles are the cop and the devil himself, the serial killer. This is speculation, clearly labelled: some outlets believe Reeves is most likely to play the cop, pointing to his long history of heroic roles and the poor reception of his previous serial-killer turn in The Watcher. But imagine the John Wick star leaning into pure menace as the devil instead — it would be the boldest swing of his post-Wick career. Either way, the fan debate is half the fun right now.
James Wan's First Feature Since Aquaman 2
This would be Wan's first directorial feature since 2023's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and he is also producing through his Blumhouse-Atomic Monster banner alongside Michael Clear and Jason Blum. The producing bench is deep: Sylvester Stallone and D. Matt Geller for Balboa Productions, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Chris S. Lee of B&C Group, and Jang Won-seok, CEO of BA Entertainment. The latest script comes from Eric Pearson (Thunderbolts*, The Fantastic Four: First Steps), working from earlier drafts by Shay Hatten (the 2026 Resident Evil reboot) and Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential, A Knight's Tale); Helgeland and Billy Acumen are executive producing.
What's Next for Reeves — and the Remake
Reeves' slate remains one of the busiest in Hollywood. He recently starred in Apple TV's Jonah Hill-directed dramedy Outcome, which debuted in April; voiced Duke Caboom in Toy Story 5; and is voicing Shadow in Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 4, in theatres on 19 March 2027. John Wick 5 is still in early development, and he has also signed on to the action thriller Shiver from Deadpool director Tim Miller, plus Ruben Östlund's The Entertainment System Is Down, which A24 will release in the US. (Reps: WME, Ziffren Brittenham.) Paramount has not set a release date for the remake, and the deal with Reeves is not yet closed — but if it lands, this becomes one of the most genuinely intriguing projects on his slate: the action credibility of John Wick meeting a director who has never missed with genre audiences.
