The Prestige IMAX Re-Release Trailer Drops for 2027
Christopher Nolan's most obsessively rewatched film is finally getting the big-screen treatment it always deserved. The Prestige IMAX re-release has been dated for January 29, 2027, and Disney just dropped the first teaser trailer and poster to celebrate the film's 20th anniversary. For the first time ever, Nolan's tale of two rival magicians will play in 70mm and IMAX — and fans of the 2006 original will never have seen it like this.
What the Teaser Shows
The brief teaser, unveiled by Walt Disney Studios on October 20, opens on a quiet, perfect image: a hand reaching toward a birdcage. It's pure misdirection, exactly the kind of tease a film about the pledge, the turn and the prestige deserves. The clip also lingers on the film's crackling electrical machinery — the kind of imagery that should look striking at IMAX scale. A poster arrived alongside it, confirming the anniversary push.
January 29, 2027: First-Ever 70mm and IMAX Presentations
The Prestige was never shot for IMAX — cinematographer Wally Pfister captured it anamorphically on 35mm film — so the conversion involves serious technical work. Nolan has said the team is creating 70mm blow-ups from Pfister's 35mm photography, and after screening a test print he called the cinematography "extraordinary." Alongside the premium presentations, the film will also screen in traditional 35mm and digital 2D, so audiences without access to the biggest screens can still catch it. Note the date shifted slightly: when the re-release was first discussed back in July, Nolan mentioned January 21, 2027 — the new confirmed date is January 29.
"I'm very excited to bring The Prestige back to the big screen, and particularly thrilled to offer audiences the chance to see it on 70mm film, and on IMAX for the first time," Nolan said in a statement accompanying the announcement.
Why The Prestige Earned a Second Life
Released exactly 20 years ago, on October 20, 2006, The Prestige was Nolan's fifth feature, sitting between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. It earned about $109 million worldwide on a $40 million budget and picked up two Oscar nominations, for Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction — yet it has always been described as one of the underappreciated entries in his filmography. Co-written with his brother Jonathan Nolan from Christopher Priest's novel, the film pits Hugh Jackman against Christian Bale as feuding Victorian stage magicians, with Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Michael Caine, Andy Serkis and David Bowie in support. It holds a 77% critics score and a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and its reputation has only grown since.
Where to Watch The Prestige Before the Re-Release
Nolan's recent track record suggests this could do serious business — his Interstellar IMAX re-release pulled strong numbers in 2024, and premium-format events are one of the few sure things left at the box office. If you can't wait until January, the film joined the US Netflix catalogue on October 1, so a 4K rewatch is one click away. But for the full effect — the transported man on a 70mm frame — the theatre is the only place to be.
