Jennifer's Body 2 Is Happening: Diablo Cody Confirms

Jennifer's Body 2 is officially happening — and it's happening "imminently." Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody confirmed the sequel on the Petticoat Revolution podcast this weekend, giving the clearest signal yet that the long-gestating follow-up to 2009's cult horror-comedy has moved beyond wishful thinking. Megan Fox is reportedly set to return as the man-eating cheerleader Jennifer Check, with filming targeted for Vancouver.

What Diablo Cody Revealed

Cody didn't just confirm the sequel — she revealed its emotional core. The new film will explore a more "sympathetic" Jennifer, digging into the loneliness, isolation, and insecurity underneath the possessed mean girl. "Jennifer is a sympathetic character for me, before and after the transformation," Cody explained. "Everybody remembers Jennifer when she's like, 'I am a god,' or when she's at her most radiant and at her most powerful. But people forget about these moments in the movie where she's like a shell of herself." It's a fascinating approach: a sequel that responds directly to how audiences spent 17 years re-evaluating the original.

Who's Coming Back

The reunion is shaping up to be the real deal. Deadline confirmed last October that Cody was developing the sequel for 20th Century Studios, and original director Karyn Kusama is expected to return — she recently said she's "very excited to hear what comes" from the follow-up. Multiple reports, including Dread Central via production listings, indicate Megan Fox will reprise Jennifer Check, with filming in Vancouver targeting an October 2026 start. Amanda Seyfried — whose Needy was the film's secret heart — hasn't been confirmed but has repeatedly said she's open to returning, and previously hinted she wouldn't do it without Fox. If both return, it's the duo horror fans have begged for since 2009.

From Box Office Bomb to Cult Classic

The sequel only exists because of one of cinema's great reappraisals. Jennifer's Body flopped in 2009, kneecapped by marketing that sold it as a straight Megan-Fox-is-hot horror movie rather than the sharp story of friendship, exploitation, and trauma it actually was. Over the following decade, a new generation — particularly queer horror fans — reclaimed it as a classic, and that rediscovery is exactly what greenlit part two. As one critic noted, the fans' one clear demand: market it as what it actually is this time. Do that, and the sequel doesn't need to wait 17 years for its audience.

When Could It Release?

No release date has been announced, and the studio hasn't made it official yet — but if Vancouver filming does begin this month as production listings suggest, a late-2027 theatrical release is the smart bet. That would land the film squarely in the Halloween horror season, where horror sequels thrive. For a movie that was once written off as a failure, Jennifer Check's second act might just be the most satisfying comeback in horror.
