The Mummy: Book of the Dead Title Revealed for 2027

The Mummy: Book of the Dead is officially the title of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz's long-awaited Mummy reunion. Universal Pictures revealed the name in a social media post celebrating one year until release — "In one year, The Mummy: Book of the Dead opens" — confirming the film for October 15, 2027. After nearly two decades of fan campaigns, the O'Connells are finally coming home.

Who's Back: The Band Is Getting Back Together

Brendan Fraser returns as treasure hunter Rick O'Connell, with Rachel Weisz back as Evie O'Connell — her first appearance in the role since 2001's The Mummy Returns. They're joined by fellow franchise veterans John Hannah (Jonathan Carnahan), Kevin J. O'Connor, and Oded Fehr as Ardeth Bay. New additions include Michael Johnston and Numan Acar in undisclosed roles. Fraser, who will also executive produce alongside Jason F. Brown of Hivemind, has been teasing this for years — back in May, he told The Tonight Show: "We're gonna get the band back together... we are going to give the audience what they have been bothering all of us for, for the last 20-whatever years."

The Creative Team: Radio Silence Takes the Helm

Directing duties go to Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett — the Radio Silence duo behind 2019's Ready or Not and Radio Silence's franchise-reviving Scream (2022). That's a savvy pick: they specialize in honoring beloved properties while dragging them somewhere fresh. The screenplay comes from David Coggeshall (Orphan: First Kill, The Family Plan), with longtime franchise producer Sean Daniel returning — he's produced every Mummy installment, including the 2017 Tom Cruise reboot he'd probably rather forget.

What Story Will It Tell?

Universal is describing the film as a direct continuation of 1999's The Mummy and 2001's The Mummy Returns — pointedly skipping over 2008's The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which even the cast now jokes about (Oded Fehr recently quipped at a convention that "only two Mummy movies exist"). No plot synopsis has been released, but given the franchise's Egyptology roots and the title's reference to the ancient funerary text, expect a misused artifact unleashing undead calamity — the series' bread and butter. Set photos have already shown Fraser and Weisz reunited on location after 25 years apart.

Why This Matters: The Fraser-ssance Continues

This is the crown jewel of the Brendan Fraser comeback. After his Oscar win for The Whale rehabilitated his career, Fraser has been selective — and choosing to return to the role that made him a star, on his own terms as executive producer, says everything about how much this means to him. The 1999 original remains one of the most rewatchable adventure films ever made ("it's always on TV somewhere," director Stephen Sommers recently laughed), and a proper sequel ignoring the missteps has been the fans' single biggest demand for two decades. October 15, 2027 can't come fast enough.
